Currency overview
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is the central monetary authority of the country, and it’s responsible for overseeing and regulating the PSP. The BSP issues banknotes and coins, supervises the banking industry — going above and beyond to ensure that the currency stays secure and stable over time. The Philippine peso is a free-floating currency, which means that its exchange rate fluctuates daily.
The Philippine Peso dates back to 1852, when the Banco Español-Filipino issued the first paper notes. Over time, it evolved from the Peso Fuerte to the current system of banknotes and coins. After gaining independence in 1946, the Peso became free-floating, subject to market fluctuations. When sending money to the Philippines, be mindful of these fluctuations, as exchange rates can change quickly, affecting the value of your transfer.
The New Generation Currency (NGC) series of PHP includes an ancient Filipino script referred to as the Baybayin script, and it can be viewed if you were to look at it in a transparent window held against the light. Moreover, in 2022, the BSP released a ₱1,000 polymer banknote, featuring futuristic security measures. Also, the BSP frequently releases several commemorative bills to honor national heroes and events, such as the ₱5,000 banknote issued in 2021, which commemorates Lapu-Lapu’s victory at the Battle of Mactan.
The ₱ symbol was created during the American colonial period in the Philippines to distinguish the Peso from the U.S. dollar. The 'P' for Peso was given two vertical lines to prevent confusion with the '$' symbol used by the U.S. dollar. The addition of these two lines represents the Philippines' efforts to establish its own monetary system in the early 20th century.
