The National Bank of Rwanda (Banque Nationale du Rwanda) serves as the country's central monetary authority, responsible for issuing banknotes, minting coins, and implementing monetary policy. The bank began issuing Rwandan francs in 1964, two years after independence from Belgian administration. Rwanda operates under a floating exchange rate regime (crawl-like in practice) — the franc's value shifts with market forces, while the central bank intervenes to maintain stability. When sending money to Rwanda, transfers are converted at rates influenced by both official policy and supply-and-demand dynamics.

The Rwandan Franc was introduced in 1964, though its story begins earlier, under colonial rule. German occupation (pre-1916) brought the East African rupie, while Belgian forces replaced it with the Belgian Congo franc; then came the Rwanda-Burundi franc in 1960. Independence in 1962 set the stage for Rwanda's own currency two years later. Rwanda's banknotes serve as a visual timeline of national progress. The 500-franc note (redesigned in 2019) features the Muregeya suspension footbridge — a treetop walkway in Nyungwe Forest that draws tourists to the country's lush highlands. The reverse shows students with laptop computers, symbolizing the nation's push toward technology-driven education. The 2024-issued 2,000-franc note highlights Lake Kivu and coffee beans (a major export), while the 5,000-franc note showcases the Kigali Convention Center alongside traditional woven baskets.

The abbreviation FRw (sometimes FRW, RF, or R₣) commonly marks Rwandan Franc transactions, borrowing from French notation — Franc Rwandais. The word Franc itself traces to medieval Latin Francorum Rex (King of the Franks), originally stamped on French gold coins in the 14th century. Rwanda's retention of the franc name post-independence reflects the administrative language inherited from Belgian rule. Plans for a unified East African shilling (shared with Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan) remain active within the East African Community, with current official messaging pointing toward 2031.
