BDT - Bangladeshi Taka
The Bangladeshi Taka (BDT ৳) is the official currency of Bangladesh. Managed by the Bangladesh Bank, it powers a nation of over 170 million people, supporting trade, savings, and international remittances. Subdivided into 100 poisha, the value of BDT has surged up and down over the years but continues to be the driving force of the youngest country in the subcontinent.
Currency overview
Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank, established in 1971 following independence, is responsible for issuing and managing the Taka. It sets monetary policy, controls inflation, and works to stabilize the currency’s value against major international currencies. The Taka operates on a floating exchange rate, with the Bangladesh Bank stepping in to protect its value.
After gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971, Bangladesh introduced its own currency — the Bangladeshi Taka — replacing the Pakistani Rupee. The first banknotes were issued on March 4, 1972, marking a new chapter in the country's economic history. The Taka quickly became a symbol of national identity and economic independence for the newly formed nation.
When Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, the Bangladeshi Taka was introduced in 1972, replacing the Pakistani Rupee at par (1 BDT = 1 PKR). Bangladesh did not have its own secure printing facilities in the initial years after independence. The very first Taka banknotes, introduced in 1972, were printed in India.
The official symbol of the Bangladeshi Taka is “৳,” derived from the Bengali script. Internationally, “BDT” is used for clarity in global financial transactions. The Taka represents Bangladesh’s economic progress and carries cultural and historical significance in every note and coin.
