Paraguayan Guaraní (PYG)

Paraguay's currency is the Guaraní (symbol: ₲; ISO code: PYG). Each guaraní technically divides into 100 céntimos, though no céntimo coins have ever entered regular circulation. The Banco Central del Paraguay controls all currency production and issuance.

The Banco Central del Paraguay

Established in 1952, the Banco Central del Paraguay manages monetary policy through a formal inflation-targeting regime adopted in 2011. The current target: 3.5% inflation with a two-percentage-point tolerance band on either side. As of late 2026, the policy rate sits at 5.50% and September inflation registered just 1.7% — well below the target midpoint. Paraguay's guaraní floats freely, and the central bank notably refrained from any foreign-exchange market intervention throughout 2026. Net international reserves hover near US$11.2 billion, providing comfortable backing.

An Indigenous name: the guaraní's origin

Most Latin American currencies inherited generic Spanish-colonial names — peso, real, escudo. Paraguay chose differently. The guaraní, created by Decree-Law No. 655 on October 5, 1943, was named directly after the Guaraní people — the cultural and linguistic identity inseparable from Paraguayan nationhood. It replaced the peso fuerte at a rate of ₲1 to 100 pesos, and the first banknote family appeared on September 8, 1944, spanning seven denominations from ₲1 to ₲1,000. The name was an assertion: monetary identity rooted in Indigenous heritage, not European convention.

The peso fuerte

Before the guaraní, Paraguay used the peso fuerte — a currency inherited from the broader Spanish-American monetary tradition. Regional colonial mints produced coinage circulating across the Río de la Plata basin, and the peso served Paraguay through independence, the devastating Triple Alliance War (1864–1870), and decades of political instability. Higher denominations appeared as the economy grew — but by the 1940s, the government sought a monetary identity reflecting Paraguayan culture rather than colonial precedent. The guaraní — named for a people rather than a unit of weight — delivered that break.

83 years and counting — the guaraní today

Here lies the guaraní's most remarkable distinction: Paraguay has never redenominated its currency. While neighbours stripped zeros — Uruguay six, Bolivia six, Nicaragua six — the guaraní has endured since 1943 without a new guaraní or zero-removal. On October 5, 2026, its 83rd birthday, the central bank unveiled a fully redesigned banknote family across all six denominations (₲2,000 through ₲100,000). Three lower notes now use polymer; the higher three remain cotton. Old notes circulate indefinitely alongside the new — no exchange deadline, no expiration.
