Omani Rial (OMR)

The Omani Rial (ر.ع.), commonly referred to as the Rial, is the official currency of the Sultanate of Oman. With the ISO code OMR and subdivided into 1000 baisa, the Rial powers transactions for about 5.3 million people across the Arabian Peninsula's southeastern coast. Issued by the Central Bank of Oman, the OMR ranks third among the world's highest-valued currency units based on official exchange rates — behind only the Kuwaiti Dinar and Bahraini Dinar.

Who Oversees Oman's Currency?

The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) stands as the sultanate's sole monetary authority, tasked with issuing banknotes, regulating financial institutions, and maintaining currency stability. The CBO succeeded the Oman Currency Board on April 1, 1975, inheriting responsibilities that have expanded alongside Oman's economic development. Oman operates a fixed exchange rate system — the Rial stays pegged to the US Dollar at approximately US$2.6008 per OMR (a parity maintained since 1986). When sending money to Oman, this dollar anchor provides reliable exchange-rate predictability for international transfers.

How Old Is The Omani Rial?

The Omani Rial came into circulation on November 11, 1972, replacing the Saidi rial at equal value. The Saidi rial itself had arrived just two years earlier in May 1970, displacing the Gulf rupee at a rate of 21 rupees per rial. Before 1940, Oman relied on Indian rupees along the coast and the Maria Theresa thaler in the interior — the thaler's local name (rial) eventually becoming the modern currency. Sultan Qaboos bin Said's 1970 ascension triggered the monetary overhaul that reshaped Omani finance.

What Makes The Omani Rial Unique?

Oman's currency carries visual weight matched by few rivals. In 2020, a fresh banknote series debuted featuring Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, the current ruler who succeeded Sultan Qaboos. Each denomination showcases Omani heritage on one face and national development on the reverse. In November 2025, the CBO unveiled an official currency symbol (scheduled for Unicode inclusion in September 2026). Constructed from stylized Arabic letters blending calligraphic tradition with geometric form, the symbol marks Oman's push toward financial modernization under Vision 2040.

What Is the Story Behind Omani Rial's Symbol?

The newly launched OMR symbol draws from the Arabic calligraphic tradition, reflecting Oman's cultural and linguistic identity. Before November 2025, Oman used ر.ع. (the Arabic abbreviation) or simply OMR in international contexts. The word Rial itself carries Spanish ancestry, derived from the real — a silver coin that circulated widely through colonial-era trade networks. The Maria Theresa thaler, once dominant in Oman's interior markets, earned the local name rial because of its size, similar to the Spanish eight-real piece.
