The Central Bank of Bolivia

Founded on July 20, 1928, the Banco Central de Bolivia emerged from recommendations by the Kemmerer Mission — an American financial advisory group that helped several Latin American nations build modern banking institutions during the 1920s. The bank operates under a managed exchange rate regime, maintaining relative stability between the boliviano and the U.S. dollar through controlled adjustments. Beyond currency issuance, it oversees monetary policy, manages foreign reserves, and serves as fiscal agent for the government — a broad mandate shaped by hard lessons from Bolivia's turbulent economic past.

Hyperinflation's shadow — birth of the modern Boliviano

Bolivia's currency history bears the scars of Latin America's worst hyperinflation crises. During 1984–1985, prices doubled roughly every 20 days — the peso boliviano evaporated in people's hands. Supreme Decree 21060, signed August 29, 1985, imposed shock therapy that crushed the spiral within weeks. On January 1, 1987, the boliviano replaced the devastated peso at a ratio of one million to one. That sweeping reform erased six zeros and gave Bolivians a currency they could trust again.

Silver mountains & colonial coin (Bolivia's pre-independence currency)

Long before the boliviano, the legendary silver mines of Potosí made Bolivia (then Upper Peru) one of the Spanish Empire's most prized possessions. The Potosí mint — established in 1573 — struck reales and escudos that circulated across the Americas and beyond. Spanish colonial currency dominated commerce for nearly three centuries. After independence in 1825, the new republic named for Simón Bolívar introduced its own monetary unit — the original boliviano — which circulated from 1864 until being replaced by the peso boliviano in 1963.

The modern Boliviano

Since the 1987 reform, the boliviano has delivered remarkable stability — a stark contrast to its predecessor's collapse. The Central Bank employs a managed exchange rate, keeping the BOB steady against the dollar for extended periods. Five banknotes circulate (Bs 10 through Bs 200), with a modernized Series B completed in recent years featuring enhanced security elements. Coins span 10 centavos to Bs 5. Bolivia's economy, fueled by natural gas exports and mining, underpins the currency — though recent reserve pressures have tested the bank's capacity to defend its rate.
