Brazilians move to Canada to study, work and pursue a better life. Statistics show that the number of Brazilians taking up permanent residence in Canada has been upward since 2015. In 2019, more than 5,000 Brazilians were granted permanent residences in Canada.
You can find over half of the Brazilian immigrants in Ontario while the other percentages live in Quebec and British Columbia. Through the efforts of the Brazilian Canadian community, Brazilians and Canadian Brazilians can showcase their colourful culture to their new home, Canada.
If you are a Brazilian living in Canada with a Brazilian passport about to expire, we have compiled helpful and straightforward ways on how you can renew your Brazilian passport in Canada to avoid breaking any rules. These tips are in accordance with the outlined requirements and procedures by the Consulate General of Brazil in Vancouver.
You must surrender your valid passport or expired passport for two (2) months or less. In case of loss or theft, you should submit the following:
Photocopy of lost passport (if available)
Police report
Form of loss, theft or destruction of travel document duly completed
After filling out the online application form for passport renewal, print the RECEIPT (RER), sign the form, and glue your photo. For minors, the RER should be signed by both parents or legal guardians. Under the NOME DO CONTATO (CONTACT NAME), write the applicant’s or legal guardian’s name and phone number.
Follow the required standards for the photo to be glued to the application form. In general, your photo should be sized 2x2 with a white background. You should have been taken your photo within the last six (6) months of the renewal date. Your face should be uncovered, ears are visible, don’t smile, and don’t wear your glasses. Glue your photo to the application form. Do not cut or staple it.
You may submit your valid passport or passport about to expire in two (2 months); or any document issued by a public agency recognized by the federal. Law as a valid identity document in national territory; or a Brazilian identity card (RG); or as an exception, a Canadian ID card if the three options above are unavailable.
If the applicant is single, you need to present your Brazilian birth certificate. If the applicant is married, divorced, or widowed, a Brazilian marriage certificate should be presented. If there is a need for a name change due to marriage, it is mandatory to present the marriage certificate.
Present the certificate of electoral compliance; or a valid voter’s card. If you don’t have a voter's card, you may check the Voting Registration procedure.
Present the Certificate of Military Enlistment; or Incorporation Exemption Certificate. If you don’t have either of those documents, you may check Military Documents. Check through the Military of Defense website or SERMIL system if your military status is regular. Once you have confirmed that your status is regular, your passport can be issued.
When renewing a passport for minors or those whose age is 18 and below, other required documents include - (1) Passport Authorization Form and Travel Authorization Form for minors, signed before the consular agent, notary public, or Honorary Consul. - (2) Identity document with photo and signature of both parents that match the documents submitted on the application. If one of the parents undergoes or needs to undergo a legal change of name due to marriage, the marriage certificate should be submitted. If only one parent signs the Authorization, a court order stating that only one of the parents can request a Brazilian passport and authorize travel abroad must be presented. This is in accordance with Brazilian legislation.
Submit a “money order” or “certified cheque” payable to the “Consulate General of Brazil” if you submitted your application by mail. If you submit your application in person, you may use a Debit card issued by a Canadian bank to pay the fees.
