How to Get Dual Citizenship for Bangladesh and Canada

Understanding Dual Citizenship

Dual citizenship allows individuals to hold legal citizenship of two countries simultaneously, enjoying the rights and responsibilities of both nations. These benefits can include the right to live and work in both countries, access to social services, and the ability to travel freely between the two nations.

This article will underline the process of acquiring dual citizenship in Bangladesh and Canada. The two countries, on opposite sides of the globe, have seen increasing interaction due to immigration, and the hope of acquiring dual citizenship is a growing sentiment among their diaspora. So, let us dive into the process and requirements without further delay.

How to Apply for a Bangladeshi Dual Nationality Certificate

Canadian citizens of Bangladeshi origin must apply for a Bangladesh Dual Nationality Certificate (DNC) to become dual citizens in Canada. Failure to get this certificate will result in the individual losing their Bangladeshi citizenship. The application can be initiated online by creating a profile on the BDCG Online Application website along with submitting their photograph and the documents listed below:

  • A copy of their valid Bangladesh passport.
  • A copy of their valid Canadian passport.
  • 6 copies of a recent photograph with a white background in 45mm x 35mm dimensions.
  • A citizenship certificate of Canada if the applicant was not born in Canada.
  • A Canadian birth certificate if the applicant was born in Canada.
  • Copy of their parents' passport(s) if the applicant was born in Canada.
  • Affidavit (Declaration) affirming the truth of the statement made before the Notary Public in Canada attested by the Global Affairs Canada or Affidavit (Declaration) signed in front of the Consular Agent at the Consulate General of Bangladesh.
  • Documentary evidence, if any, regarding remittances sent to Bangladesh.
  • Online payment/Bank draft/Money order/Certified cheque or to be paid in person by Debit/Credit card.

Once you save and submit, a confirmation page will be generated, and a copy will be sent to the applicant's e-mail.

Submitting Your Documents

This confirmation must be submitted by post or in person along with the following:

  • A signed confirmation page
  • Original copy of the affidavit/declaration
  • 6 copies of 45mm x 35mm recent colour photographs
  • Bank draft/Money order/Certified cheque (if not paid online) or pay in person by Debit/Credit card to the Consulate

Where Should I Address My Application?

When submitting by post, applicants must send a self-addressed, trackable return envelope along with their documents addressed to:

The Consular Section, Bangladesh Consulate General, 2235 Sheppard Ave. East (Atria II), Suite # 1505, Toronto, ON M2J 5B5, Canada.

Applications must reach the Consulate General directly, as no application will be collected from a post office or courier service. Also, remember that applications received without a trackable return envelope will not be processed.

What Are the Fees for a Bangladeshi Dual Nationality Certificate?

A Dual Nationality Certificate costs CAD 80.00. Applicants can pay this online or through a bank draft/postal order addressed to the Bangladesh Consulate General in Toronto or by debit/credit card at the Consulate counter.

The application will be examined, and upon approval, the applicant will be sent the certificate to their return address or notified to collect it from the Consulate.

Dual Citizenship in Canada

Canada has an accommodating policy around dual or multiple citizenships. Canadian citizens can acquire citizenship in another country without losing their Canadian citizenship. Thus, if you are a Bangladeshi citizen migrating to Canada as a permanent resident, you can acquire Canadian citizenship once you fulfill the following criteria:

  • Reside in Canada for at least three years within the five years before applying for citizenship.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English or French.
  • Pass the Citizenship Test if you are an individual aged 18-54. The citizenship test covers different aspects of Canadian history, values, institutions, and symbols.
  • Complete a Canadian citizenship application form, provide the required documents, and pay the application fee.

Once the application is approved, attend a citizenship ceremony to take the Oath of Citizenship and officially become a Canadian citizen.

Conclusion

Obtaining dual citizenship in Bangladesh and Canada offers numerous benefits but requires careful navigation of each country's legal and bureaucratic processes. By understanding the eligibility criteria and application procedures, individuals can successfully achieve and manage dual citizenship, enjoying the privileges and fulfilling the obligations of both nations.
