What is an IBAN Number in Germany?

An IBAN is an International Bank Account Number. In Germany, it turns local bank details into a standard format used for SEPA payments, euro transfers, international bank transfers, and account validation.

A German IBAN starts with DE and includes two check digits, an eight-digit bank code known as the Bankleitzahl or BLZ, and a ten-digit account number. Some transfers may also request the bank’s BIC or SWIFT code.
