Vietnam is a thin, S-shaped country bordering Laos and Cambodia in the South China Sea in Asia. It is a relatively small country, with only just over 331 thousand square kilometres. This means it is about 1/30th the size of Canada. It does have a large population though and is currently the 15th most populous country in the world with over 97 million citizens. Though the country is small in terms of size, it has a large presence in terms of beauty and exports. The land is crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers, marked by ancient Buddhist temples, mountains with lush tropical rain forests and thousands of tall, jutting islands along the coast. It is considered the leading cashew and black pepper producer in the world and is one of the biggest coffee exporting countries.
The old capital city, Ho Chi Minh City, is the largest in Vietnam, with over 8 million residents. The current capital city, Hanoi, is close to the same size, and also has just over 8 million residents in the city. Can Tho, Bien Hoa and Da Nang are the next largest cities, but are all considerably smaller than the first two. While the two largest cities have huge populations, most Vietnamese residents live in smaller towns and villages throughout the rest of the country.
As with many other Asian countries, Lunar New Year is an important celebration each year in Vietnam. The event is marked by large family gatherings, cleaning and decorating homes and specially prepared foods. There are a number of smaller, local festivals that are important depending on where you live, such as the Hung King Temple Festival in the Phu Tho province. During this annual festival, people gather to play games like human chess, host rice cooking competitions, lion dances, wrestling matches and more. Since more than 50% of the Vietnamese population is Buddhist, Buddha’s Birthday on the 9th lunar day of April is an important holiday each year. National festivals are held around the country, and pagodas are cleaned and decorated with pink lotus flowers.
Most Vietnamese immigrants to Canada arrived in the aftermath of the Vietnam War at the end of the 1970s and during the 1980s. By 2016, there were 240,615 people who reportedly traced their history directly to Vietnam on the census, mostly living in Canada’s larger cities. There are also 166,000 Canadians whose first language is Vietnamese, making it the fourteenth most common mother tongue for immigrants to Canada today. Remitbee was founded by immigrants in order to meet the online money transfer needs of other immigrants, and we are happy to be able to better serve the large, vibrant population of Vietnamese Canadians today. We now offer some of the most competitive Canadian Dollar to Vietnamese đồng exchange rates available and keep your funds safe during their transfer home.
There are a number of large banking institutions in Vietnam where you can transfer funds to. Vietinbank is the largest in the country, followed closely by Agribank, Vietcombank, BIDV and Eximbank. As long as you have your family’s personal bank account information, you can transfer money directly from your account into their account safely and quickly.
