How To Renew Your Ivory Coast Passport in Canada

By Remitbee - Mar 10, 2022

Situated along the southern coast of West Africa, Ivory Coast is one of the wealthiest countries in the region. And since their independence from France in 1960, they've been among the fastest-growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Many Ivorians live in other French-speaking nations like Canada. It results from the massive migration of millions of West Africans to Western countries during the 19th to 20th century. Now, many black Canadians have West African origin. It's safe to say that a strong bond ties Canada and Ivory Coast.

Currently, roughly 1.2 million Ivorians live abroad, and Canada is one of the popular go-to places. Staying in Canada is easy as long as you keep your documents up-to-date, especially your passport!

5 Steps to Renew Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) Passport from Canada

Application for your Ivorian passport renewal in Canada may take only a few minutes! Here's a step-by-step guide to that.

Step 1: Make sure you're eligible to renew your passport.

Before renewing your Ivory Coast passport in Canada, make sure you're eligible. The applicant for renewal must be 18 years* or older and has/is either the following:

  • An Ivorian passport about to expire or already expired issued within the last 15 years
  • Has legally changed/corrected name (or other personal information)
  • Has run out or running out of visa blank pages
  • Passport not heavily damaged or mutilated

*Applicants below 18 need additional documentation.

Step 2: Complete the application form and other required documents

You may fill out the downloadable application form for a more convenient process. Take note that the form is in French. Unfortunately, there is no readily available English version of it online. If you need help to complete the form, you may translate it here instantly.

You may also fill out the form on your computer. If you have one in your passport, indicate whether you want to keep an unexpired visa in a separate letter. When your old passport is cancelled, it may affect the validity of your visa.

Don't forget to include the following documents with your application:

  • One photo ID
  • Your old passport and a photocopy of its first page
  • Original and photocopy of your CNI (Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage)
  • Payment receipt for the renewal of passport (downloadable upon paying for your transaction)

For applicants 14 to 17 years old, you need to submit the following additional requirements:

  • Notarized parent/guardian authorization
  • Original and photocopy of a parent/guardian's CNI

Additionally, for applicants 13 and below, you need to attach your birth certificate along with the requirements mentioned above.

You may also get a hard copy of the application form by going to the Ivorian Embassy in Ottawa.

*If your passport was lost, attach a loss report/affidavit of loss. Applicants without a CNI need to submit a valid identity certificate, CNI enrollment receipt, and a photocopy and original copy of the mother or father's CNI.

Step 3: Pay for the application fees.

Ivory Coast passport renewal usually costs around 40,000 CFA (86.39 CAD), but it may vary depending on your case. So to be sure, contact the embassy first.

Step 4: Submit your application.

Compile your documents in an envelope and drop them off at the Ivorian Embassy in Ottawa. Although it's encouraged to turn in your application via postal mail, there are some cases when you need to submit the documents yourself on-site (e.g. updating your biometrics like photo or signature, etc.). If you are submitting in-face, be sure to go there during office hours (Mon-Fri; 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.). That is why it'll be best to set an appointment first.

Step 5: Wait for your application to get verified.

The Embassy will then forward your application to the Air and Border Police in Ivory Coast for verification. If there aren't any problems, you can expect your passport to be ready after 15-30 working days (or even shorter, for walk-in applicants).

You may contact the Embassy if you have any concerns or want an update about your application. Likewise, the Embassy will let you know if there's a problem with your application.

Step 6: Claim your passport.

The Embassy will notify you via SMS or email when your passport is ready. In claiming your documents, be sure to bring the following:

  • Valid IDs (or any proof of identification)
  • Acknowledgement receipt/slip

If you can't collect your passport yourself, give your trusted person a signed authorization letter. For minors, a parent/guardian may get the documents.
