Breaking News: Toronto Major Power Outage

By Remitbee - Aug 11, 2022

A majority of Toronto’s downtown core is currently affected by an electric power outage. Over 10,000 users have been without power since 12:30 PM on Thursday, August 11, 2022

Popular areas such as the Eaton Centre, Yonge and Dundas Square, St Lawrence Market and even Toronto Police Headquarters have gone dark. Toronto Transportation Services estimates that the outage spans at least 4 blocks.

Due to the outage, several elevators are stuck with people inside. Including Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser. Toronto Fire is working to rescue those stuck, and those who live in the area will notice an increase in sirens.

Sources say that the outage was caused accidentally by a construction crane. It’s expected that the outage will continue into the late night as Toronto Hydro waits for repair supplies and support.

Tips For Power Outages

  1. Avoid opening your freezer/fridge to maintain its cold temperatures
  2. Treat all intersections as a 4 way stop sign. Look all ways and give right of way to those who arrived at the intersection first
  3. Turn off appliances and tools to avoid a power surge once electricity is reinstated.
