How to Renew British Passport in Canada?

These are the simple steps you need to take to renew your British passport in Canada. These tips and advice are based on the guidelines from www.gov.uk.

Step 1. Go to www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport.

Step 2. Click “start now.”

Step 3. When asked if you live in the UK, answer No, then select Canada as your country or territory.

Step 4. Once you’ve read the information provided, hit continue and provide your birthdate.

Step 5. Get a digital passport photo, then upload it.

To get your digital passport photo, you can go to a photography shop or booth that has the option to give you a code with your image. Otherwise, you can upload your photo on an app that generates a code that you can use for your passport renewal application. After entering your photo code, check your photo, then submit it so that it will be directly added to your application.

You can also take your digital photo at home using your smartphone, tablet, or digital camera.

Guidelines for British passport photos:

  • Use plain light-coloured background.

  • Use natural light if possible. Make sure there are no shadows on your face or behind you.

  • To reduce shadows from forming in your photo, you may stand 0.5 meters or 1.5 feet away from your background. The one taking your image should be 1.5 meters or 5 feet away from you.

  • Include your head, shoulders, and upper body.

  • There’s no need to crop your photo.

  • Face the camera with eyes open and mouth closed.

  • Wearing headwear is only allowed if used for religious or medical purposes.

  • Make sure your eyes are fully visible. Tuck your hair away from your face and eyes.

  • Wearing glasses is not recommended. However, if you need to keep your glasses on, your eyes should be visible without glare or reflections. You cannot wear any tinted glasses.

  • Once you’ve taken your photo, upload it. It must be coloured, unaltered, a .jpeg file of at least 50KB to 10MB.

  • Before proceeding, check the grade of your photo if it meets all the rules or not. If it scores poorly, you may consider choosing another picture.

  • Determine when your passport was issued and which is your passport issuing authority.

  • The application will also ask if your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged. Just tick one or answer yes if that is true to your situation.

  • Determine your nationality as indicated in your British passport.

Step 9. Check the box if you agree with the Declaration.

The Declaration states that the information you provided is correct. You agree to the terms and conditions and allow the HM Passport Office to record, store, use, and share your data according to their privacy policy.

Step 10. Write down and save your application reference number.

This will be used to track your application status, additional documents, and passport delivery.

Step 11. Send your old passport and other additional documents (if it applies) with a strong envelope.

Step 12. Get your identity confirmed (if required).
