Getting a landed status or permanent residency in Canada can be a daunting task for immigrants hoping to enter the country but there are ways to fast-track the process to reduce stress on individuals and their families.
Express entry is a system the Canadian government has implemented to manage permanent residence applications, filling labor gaps through economic immigration programs.
The government of Canada provides an application process for skilled working immigrants who want to set roots in the country and contribute to the economy.
There are 4 steps to complete if you wish to apply for Express Entry.
To find out if you’re eligible for an Express Entry program you must meet the minimum requirements, you can go to the Canadian government website and fill out an online form to figure out if you qualify.
You will be asked about nationality, age, language ability, education, work experience, family members, and details about any job offer you may have. Accuracy is key for the success of your application and if approved you will be placed in a pool of immigration candidates.
There are 3 economic immigration programs that Express Entry manages; Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. Detailed requirements for each of these programs can be found here.
Canada also recruits candidates from the Express Entry pool through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
It is essential to have all your necessary documents ready to show that your eligible for Express Entry. It can take a long time for these documents to be processed, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but still try to have them ready as soon as possible.
You will need some or all of the documents listed below:
passport or travel documents
language test results
educational credential assessment report
a written job offer from a Canadian employer.
Applicants may also be asked for police certificates, medical exams, and proof of funds.
Details on how to obtain each of these documents can be found here.
Your Express Entry profile tells the Canadian government information about yourself and if the eligibility step has been completed successfully, you’ll be accepted into a pool of candidates.
From there, your profile will be ranked using a points-based system. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to calculate your score assessing skills, education, language ability, work experience and other factors.
You can check your score if you’ve passed the eligibility stage for at least one program and would like to see what your ranking might be. You can also check your score if you were invited to apply for a permanent residence and want to see if profile changes impact your application.
You can use this online tool the Canadian government has provided to calculate your CRS score.
If you had a high CRS score then Canada will invite you to apply for permanent residence. You have a 90-day period to submit your permanent residence application and from there the Canadian government will process complete applications that have all the required supporting documents within 6 months.
There are some fees tied to a permanent residence application; for your application, the cost is $1325 which is the same for a spouse. To include a dependent child the application will cost an additional $225.
There have been changes to how the government processes applications due to COVID-19, Canada recognizes that travel restrictions have impacted the way immigrants enter the country. Details that go beyond COVID testing and mandatory 14-day isolation are listed on the Government of Canada’s website.
Processing permanent residence applications may take longer than anticipated at this time since some applications are being prioritized such as Canadians trying to return to Canada, vulnerable people and those who perform or support essential services.
To withdraw your application and receive a refund you will have to withdraw within 24 hours of submitting or if the government hasn’t started processing.
