Before earning your unrestricted G driver's license in Ontario, you must pass two phases. The first is G1, similar to a permit given to a beginner driver.
You must have utilized your G1 license for at least 12 months before applying for a G2. You can earn it in 8 months if you enroll and pass a government-approved driver's education course.
In this article we cover:
Can You Extend G2 License
A G2 license is the second license issued to a person who has finished the beginner stage when learning to drive. You don’t require a fully licensed driver to be with you as you drive with this license.
You may drive alone or with a companion at any time of day or night. Driving on the highway is also not restricted for you.
Before taking a final road test to obtain a full G driver's license, you can utilize the G2 license for one year. A G2 license allows you to own a car and register as the owner. You must, however, take an insurance policy.
A G2 license does not imply that you are qualified to drive in any manner you like. There are several limitations with G2 drivers that you should know;
This rule does not apply when the other passengers are immediate family members. It also does not apply if the co-driver has held a G driver's license for more than four years.
Your blood alcohol level must be zero. -Your passengers must not be more than the number of working seatbelts in your car.
Having a G2 license, however, doesn’t exempt you from observing the same traffic laws as a fully licensed G driver. When you break the traffic laws, you will receive demerits. If you have nine demerits or more, the Ontario transportation Ministry can suspend your G2 license for sixty days. It may also affect your Ontario auto insurance premium.
Each time you are convicted, the punishments become more severe. Eventually, you may be required to repeat the whole graduated process. You will have to pay all the fees again and past hours spent driving will not be considered.
Once you’ve driven using your G1 license for one year, you are now ready to take a G2 license.
The first thing to do is to book a test. You can book it online, over the phone, or in person. If you attended a driver’s training course, the school or your instructor could do it for you.
Once you book the test, you wait for the actual road test. It will be a 20-minute road test. Some of the things the test instructors will need to test you on are;
Whether you know how to parallel park and back up.
You must first make an appointment with a driver examination center to schedule your test for a G2 license. They will let you know when to take your road test at your selected location 42 days after booking.
Drive test employees administer all tests in a Drive test center approved by the Ministry of Transportation. You are required to pay $53.75 for your G2 road test attempt.
If you fail the first road test, you are allowed a retake. The road test retakes and any subsequent ones will cost you $53.50 each.
Once you pass your G2 road test, you can only use it for 12 months. Within those 12 months, you should have booked and passed tests for your G driver’s license.
Once your G2 license has expired, you will not be able to renew it. If you have already scheduled a road test, you may be eligible for an extension.
The extension will only be up to the road test date.
