Diwali Festival in Edmonton 2021

By Remitbee - Oct 12, 2021

Diwali, the Hindu's most important celebration, is rapidly approaching! Although the joy of Diwali is mainly observed in India, the combination of sound, colour, and light that one may witness in Canada is nothing short of spectacular - it's like combining Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve!

Diwali is a joyous festival that originated in India and is now celebrated by millions of people worldwide. It's a harvest festival, but it's also a religious holiday for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.

In Canada, traditional celebrations feature Indian music and dancing all around the country. Traditionally, fireworks and street fairs attract thousands of people in many towns and cities of Canada during Diwali. This year's celebration, which falls on November 4, will be a little different. Other outdoor activities may be limited and virtual so that everyone can participate from the comfort of their own homes.

Typically, Diwali fairs and bazaars have vendors selling pottery, home décor, sweets, prayer material, fashion, jewelry, henna painting, and other items to enjoy the event's spirit while also going on a shopping spree.

It features henna tattoos, hand-made jewelry, performers for face painting and craft shows, and other activities to entertain children and adults who attend the event. To encourage public engagement, fun competitions are also held.

Covid-19 and Firework Permits During Diwali in Edmonton

At times like this, many families gather together to celebrate. People turn on all the lights in their homes and gather together to eat and socialize. This is an important occasion for many South Asian families and the entire Edmonton community.

However, Diwali usually involves huge social gatherings, which are not recommended or possible in the event of a pandemic. Like every other holiday in 2021, Diwali this year will have to take on a slightly different look.

Faith-based gatherings in Edmonton and other COVID-19 hotspots will be limited to one-third of the building's capacity.

On private property, short-range fireworks are permitted.

Fireworks are a popular form of entertainment, especially during the Diwali festival. Here's all you need to know about fireworks safety:

  • A Firework Permit is required to use fireworks in Edmonton.
  • Unless you have a certified professional, you cannot use fireworks on public parks, schoolyards, sidewalks, or streets.
  • On residential property, short-range fireworks are allowed. As per Federal Regulations, ground products are recommended for most homes that do not have enough room for aerial products.
  • Lastly, examine the safety information provided by the Canadian government.

For 2021, residents of Edmonton need to get a permit to use fireworks, and only short-range fireworks on their property are allowed on the following days:

  • Victoria Day - May 24, 2021
  • Canada Day - July 1, 2021
  • Diwali - November 4, 2021
  • New Year's Eve - December 31, 2021

Fireworks that travel less than three meters or 10 feet are considered short-range and permitted on private property. So, it is illegal to use fireworks that fly higher than 3 meters for everyone's information. The property owner could face fines ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Before you buy, know what products you'll be able to use legally on your property. It is also recommended to work with a Fire Prevention Officer to pre-determine the site for your community or public events.

In the past, there were no excuses for not partying and celebrating the Festival of Lights all night with your loved ones as the sparkling lamps and flaming fireworks lit up the Diwali night.

You got to taste Indian foods and experience all the fun and entertainment from boat parties to community shows, nightclub galas, and cultural events in Edmonton! Before the rush, people reserved their tickets for Diwali events in the United States and Canada as early as possible.

This year, some outdoor Diwali activities will be turning online, including live music, dance performances, entertainment shows, and much more. Despite Covid-19 restrictions, you can still celebrate with thousands of other Indians and Canadians!
